Baker Box – CAT-5 AES Microphone Converter

AES audio converter for CAT-5The newest version of this high quality RJ-45/CAT-5 alternative to dry-pair and line amps for remote broadcasting & pro-audio applications, the BBX "Baker Box" provides a convenient, high performance way to transport your microphone signals from the field to your audio console. Using widely available CAT-5 unshielded twisted pair cables with RJ-45 connectors, each box accommodates an analog, stereo pair mic source. These analog signals are immediately converted to 24-bit digital balanced AES, establishing your noise floor at the mic source, and transported down the CAT-5 cable. Up to 4 boxes can be combined, by either a daisy-chain or star topology, to deliver signals up to 500 meters (1,640 ft.).

Power to the units may be provided locally or upstream via the CAT-5 cable.  This eliminates the need for line amplifiers and the9-volt batteries required to run them.  Each analog input provides phantom power for both 12V and 48V powered mics. There are also six gain settings to accommodate a wide range of gain structures. The sample rate can be set at 48K or 96K and the mics can be easily monitored via a 1/8" stereo "walkman-type" ear buds.

Finally, the LED display doubles as a dBu Peak Meter in 6db steps when the switch is set in the proper position.

Each TX box delivers the converted AES-3 signal at a front-panel BNC. It also sends the signal down the CAT-5 to the RX unit, via up to three other BBX units, each of which adds another stereo mic pair AES signal to the CAT-5 trunk.

The RX 1 RU frame can support up to two "strings" of BBX TX's. Each string features four RJ-45 inputs from each of the TX's when used in "star" configurations, one RJ-45 from a single TX when used in daisy- chain configurations, and four AES outputs on BNC's. There is convenient monitoring of any of the incoming digital audio signals via a 1/8" stereo jack for "walkman-type" earbuds. A selection dial and LEDs indicate which signal is being monitored.

The BBX system can be used by itself or as a compliment to our various fiber optic transport systems, such as Adder II multichannel AES/EBU fiber optic multiplexers.

Whether at the track, the course or the ballpark, the Baker Box can be a tremendous aid in acquiring quality audio signals with ease.
