New SCamp™ Increases Range of SMPTE Hybrid Camera Cables

Las Vegas, NV. — April 24, 2006 — Telecast Fiber Systems today announced a new SMPTE cable amplifier, called the SCamp™ that allows broadcasters to extend the operating distance of their SMPTE fiber-equipped cameras from Sony® and Ikegami®. The SCamp is the industry’s first fiber optic repeater for SMPTE 311M hybrid fiber/wire cable systems.

“The practical distance limit of hybrid camera cables can be a function of fiber attenuation, optical connector loss, or electrical power loss,” said Eugene Baker, CTO of Telecast Fiber Systems. “Our new SCamp SMPTE cable amplifiers provide an optical power boost to overcome both of these optical limitations. This means that broadcasters will be able to take their cameras farther from the base station, without concern for an accompanying reduction in signal quality.”

Similar in concept to triaxial repeaters, the SCamp is a bidirectional optical repeater that can be inserted in-line at virtually any point midpath in the hybrid cable run. The unit is powered directly by the camera’s base station via the hybrid cable and displays the received optical power levels in both directions with an easy-to-read LED bar-graph display. The SCamp’s greater optical power and increased receiver sensitivity help users to overcome the cumulative effects of aging, wear, and dirt on the hybrid cable/fiber performance.

Wins Best of Show at NAB 2006

This innovative repeater for SMPTE 311 copper/fiber hybrid cable was awarded the prestigious BE Pick Hit at NAB 2006 in Las Vegas. The SCamp monitors and reports optical power levels at any hybrid cable connection, and repeats the digital signals in both directions at full level.
