Mohegan Sun Arena Flexes Infrastructure with Telecast Fiber Systems

WORCESTER, Mass. — March 13, 2007 — Telecast Fiber Systems today announced that Mohegan Sun Arena, part of the Northeast’s premier entertainment destination in Connecticut — Mohegan Sun, is using a range of fiber optic linking systems from Telecast to support and simplify production for a range of sports, concerts, game shows, and other entertainment events. The Telecast gear, provided by systems integrator Conover Production Services, allows the arena to standardize its fiber network on one connector type for easier setup and, in turn, to establish more reliable fiber connectivity among venues across the facility and to its mobile production unit and transmission areas.

“Telecast represents the industry standard when it comes to fiber connectors, and this installation has greatly improved our confidence in supporting broadcast products of all types and sizes,” said Kevin Reilly, manager of production at Mohegan Sun Arena. “During setup for any game or show, we know that we’re providing the visiting production team with familiar connectors with a record of good reliability and performance. Furthermore, with extra Telecast modules on hand, we’re equipped with ample rental inventory to supplement our internal equipment roster.”

Following the expansion of the casino and construction of the arena, different types of fiber runs have been made to accommodate high-profile network productions. With increased use of fiber pathways and demands from internal productions, the facility chose to purchase and deploy its own industry-standard fiber solutions. Mohegan Sun Arena’s new store of Telecast equipment includes Adder™ 322 audio, data, and intercom multiplexers; DiamondBack™ II analog video multiplexers; Rattler™ HD/SDI links; and stand-alone point-of-view (POV) video, audio, and data transceivers.

Conover Production Services installed the Telecast equipment to link four venues within the facility to a central production and transmission area. These venues include a 10,000-seat arena, home to the WNBA’s Connecticut Sun, and hosts concerts for performers such as Aerosmith, Rascal Flatts, and Eric Clapton; The Cabaret Theatre, an intimate venue in Mohegan Sun’s Casino of the Sky that hosts world class concert performers and comedians; Wolf Den, the center of entertainment in Mohegan Sun’s Casino of the Earth, which plays host to billiards, arm wrestling, blackjack tournaments, and other legendary performers; and the Mohegan Sun hotel lobby, which has hosted NBC’s “George Michael’s Sports Machine,” ESPN’s “SportsCenter” and FOX’s “Best Damn Sports Show,” among others.

“One of the issues we faced was that the arena’s existing fiber infrastructure was not optimized for the needs of broadcasters so staff technicians were constantly working to find adapters and change connectors,” added Bob Conover, of Conover Production Services. “Some projects came ‘loaded for bear’ and were prepared for any situation. Others showed up with the bare minimum of equipment and often needed more than what they ordered. Through this Telecast purchase and improved fiber installation, the facility is better equipped to manage its fiber network and provide first-rate facilities for visiting performers and networks.”

“Mohegan Sun has positioned themselves as a premier venue for HD production,” said Joe Commare, vice president of marketing and international sales for Telecast. “Their installation is ready for any event that comes into the building, and this can be leveraged as an advantage over other venues in Southern New England in terms of attracting major events and talent.”
